Is a heavy dumbbell squat holding onto the shoulders like a front squat better than a barbell squat?

It depends on what you want out of it. If you’re strength focused then no. Why? Because it would be kind of difficult to go really heavy with dumbbells (you don’t really see heavy dumbbells outside of the standard 150 lb ones and that’s at a powerlifting gym). If you’re not strength focused and your only focus are the individual parts of the movement you’d probably be fine with just using the dumbbells.

*I actually remember using the front squat dumbbell hold for a leg movement before I got into powerlifting.
