First things first, take all of the weight off of the bar. You’re not going to get good form by loading the bar up with your 1rm because your form is going to deteriorate as the bar gets heavier. That’s one things you’re going to hear almost every “fitness professional” say to a person asking this same question.
Next, you want to follow the following cues to make sure you know what to watch out for when you’re squatting.
*this was made assuming that you know how to unrack the bar
- For a standard squat you want to make sure that your feet are spread knees width apart
- Make sure that your toes are pointed at a 30-degree angle
- Your knees should go over your toes when you squat
- Hinge at the hips and push your knees out over your toes at the same time
*take a deep breath and brace before you squat the weight
- Keep your lower back neutral
- Keep your chest pointed outward
- Lockout (or lok joints out when you squat the weight back up)
- The goal when you lock the weight out is to drive your hips up and forward (everything else will come naturally)
*it’s all about hip drive
